We are delighted to announce the official launch of the Garden to Table programme at St Joseph’s Catholic School, Taihape—a transformative initiative designed to equip our students with essential life skills through hands-on, real-world learning.
At the heart of the programme are two incredibly talented specialists:
Joe Wilson, our Kitchen Specialist, brings a wealth of culinary knowledge, creativity, and a passion for wholesome food. Joe empowers students to prepare and cook seasonal meals, fostering confidence, independence, and a love for nutritious food.
Leah Dixon, our Garden Specialist, is equally inspiring. With her deep understanding of horticulture and sustainable practices, Leah guides students in establishing and caring for the school’s garden. Her expertise helps students connect with the environment and understand the journey from seed to plate.
As part of their first kitchen experience, students worked alongside Joe to make fried fries paired with a delicious mixed herb butter—a simple but flavourful dish that introduced them to fundamental cooking techniques and the joys of shared food preparation.
This programme is about more than just cooking and gardening—it is about cultivating soft skills such as teamwork, communication, responsibility, patience, and problem-solving. These are the skills that form the foundation of holistic education, supporting our CARE values and preparing students to thrive in all aspects of life.
By learning where food comes from, how to grow it, and how to prepare it thoughtfully, our students are developing a deeper appreciation for sustainability, wellbeing, and community.
We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Hautapu Rural Supplies for their generous support in helping us source essential gardening equipment. Their contribution has played a key role in getting our programme off the ground.
We look forward to seeing the many ways this programme will enrich our students’ learning and nurture their growth.
